Named and Shamed: Judging the Judges (July 2020)

June 27th – In Germany, Timo Rost was the beneficiary of a gift draw versus Gino Kanters.

The 76-76 cards of Mustafa Erenay & Maurizio Rinaudo saved the prospect’s ‘0’.

July 3rd – In Moscow, Magimed Madiev was held to a draw by underdog Artur Osipov in a fight for the Russian middleweight strap.

One judge, Irakli Malazonia, saw fit to score it a ludicrous shutout 100-90 for Madiev, overruled by the 95-95 & 95-96 cards of his colleagues.

July 7th – Andres Cortes was dropped in round 4 by Alejandro Salinas, but won a decision.

The 79-73 card of Dave Moretti, not scoring a 10-8 for the knockdown, was mystifying.

July 11th – Another German robbery.

3-0 prospect Ali Dohier was dominated over 8 rounds by journeyman Fouad El Massoudi.

He was gifted a draw thanks to the cards of Dominic Kuhaupt (76-75) & Christian Roesen (76-76).

July 24th – The return to live boxing of Golden Boy promotions and DAZN descended into farce when top contender Seniesa Estrada was allowed in the same ring as 42 year old Miranda Adkins.

Adkins had a 5-0 (with 5 KOs) record made up of what can only have been sham contests in her native Kansas and surrounding areas. None of her opponents had a single professional victory.

It all ended in a violent seven second knockout: Adkins stutter-stepping out of the corner like someone who had never laced up a pair of gloves before, head-first into the thresher of Estrada’s combination punching.

Shame on the California State Athletic Commission for licensing this dangerous mismatch, and boss Andy Foster rightly expressed regret:

That Adkins’ manager (and ex-husband, supposedly), the despicable John Carden, once knowing allowed an intellectually disabled Special Olympian in a pro boxing ring (yes, I’m serious) is barely surprising to me:

Maybe I’m just numb to boxing’s disgusting ills at this point.

July 25th – Chris Bourke largely dominated Ramez Mahmood in his Southern Area 122lb. title win.

Ref Bob Williams, the sole arbiter, scored the bout an unrealistically close 96-94.

July 31st – Boxing was back in the BT studios to finish off the month.

Mark Lyson strangely separated Caoimhin Agyarko and Jez Smith towards the end of round 7, with Smith sitting on the middle rope having absorbed another hard body shot from Agyarko (he had been down to a body shot moments before).

Instead of ruling it a knockdown due the ropes holding Smith up or letting the action continue, the only two logical options, this needless separation may have been enough to see Smith make it through the round.

Agyarko would finish the job anyway in the 9th.

In the night’s main event, John Latham’s 116-113 was far too generous to the industrious but ineffective Dec Spelman, who was roundly outboxed by Lyndon Arthur.

Arthur retained his Commonwealth 175lb. belt and moved towards a likely clash with Anthony Yarde.
